Once you’ve decided to start vaping, it’s time to figure out which vape device is right for you. Take a look through our helpful guide to learn more about the different vapes you can find, how they work, and some of the features to know before you choose your device.

For new vape users, there are a few vaping devices that stand out from the rest. For many, the best choices for beginners are going to be pod systems and vape pens. Below, we detail how these two vape devices are different, including how they work and their advantages and disadvantages.

Pod Systems

A relatively new option in the last few years is pod systems. Pod system vape devices have been gaining popularity rapidly among first-time vape users due to their low-profile designs, as well as the ability to easily switch between flavors and nicotine strengths through the use of cartridges.

Similar to cigarettes offering a variety of brands and types, pod systems come in two distinct options: closed and open. The most common characteristics of pod systems overall are:

  • Sleek, discreet designs
  • Interchangeable flavor cartridges
  • Salt-based nicotine ejuice
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Mouth-to-lung inhale
  • Inhale-initiated vapor production
  • Easy on/off switches to preserve battery life

Closed Pod Systems

A closed pod system, such as a Juul, is a great choice for on-the-go vaping as it requires almost no setup, is low maintenance, and flavors can be switched out quickly. Beginner vape users and casual users alike both love closed pod systems because there’s little to think about when vaping with one. All you need to do is recharge the internal battery and switch out cartridges after they run out of juice. Unfortunately, since closed pod systems have single-use flavor cartridges, you can only use these cartridges once. Leaving you to have to buy a new cartridge each time one runs out.

  • Pros: No maintenance, compact design, perfect for on-the-go vaping
  • Cons: Short battery life, restricted to device’s cartridges, limited flavor options, creates waste with multiple cartridges being used

Open Pod Systems

Just like a closed pod system, open pod systems—like Suorin Air starters—are great for new and casual vapers because of their discreet size, shape, and the limited setup necessary. The major difference with an open pod system is with the removable pods or cartridges. Unlike a closed system, open pod devices allow you to reuse cartridges multiple times, refilling them with your own eliquids.

  • Pros: Many compact designs to choose from, USB battery charger, ability to choose your own eliquid flavors, great for helping to quit smoking
  • Cons: Short battery life, cost of replacing cartridges can add up

Suggested Eliquid – Nicotine Salts

Nicotine salt ejuices are the preferred option for these devices. Because they closely resemble the experience of smoking and generate a minimal amount of vapor. The higher nicotine strength (typically 35 to 50mg) that nicotine salt juices are capable of are best for these types of devices. Most of these juices are roughly 50VG/50PG, which is perfect for this type of device. Learn more about VG/PG ratios.

Starter Kits

If you’re looking for more advanced options that offer a little more in terms of cloud production and customization, select starter kits—like all-in-one devices and vape pens or vape sticks— are the perfect devices for you.

All-in-One Devices

If you like the simplicity of a pod system but are looking for more from your vaping device, all-in-one devices are a great option. Devices like the Aspire Breeze or Spryte offer pod system-like simplicity, but come with larger ejuice containers and bigger batteries.

The main difference between these devices and pod systems is that instead of a disposable pod, you have a refillable tank. Rather replacing the entire pod or cartridge, you’ll replace a coil in these devices when performance starts to falter. For devices like the Breeze or Spryte, this is a prebuilt coil that you simply screw into your device, making it no more difficult that replacing a pod.

  • Pros: Larger eliquid tank, longer battery life than most pod systems, increased vapor production that offers both mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung inhales
  • Cons: Coils will need to be replaced, can go through more vapor with increased airflow

Suggested Eliquid – Nicotine Salts & Standard Juice Options

These devices work great for both nicotine salts and freebase nicotine (what’s in most vape juices) options. Offering more power than pod systems but not nearly the power of vape pens and box mods, these are incredibly versatile and can use ejuices specific to your needs. They can handle thinner juices, such as a 50VG/50PG ratio, as well as eliquids as thick as 70VG/30PG.

Vape Pens

Vape pens may be one of the most recognizable vaping devices available today. When they first came out, vape pens were a popular option for smokers trying to quit as they offered more of a cig-a-like (ecigarette) feel. As time has gone on, vape pens have evolved.

Today’s vape pens—like a SMOK Stick Prince or SMOK Vape Pen 22—give users a box mod type experience in a smaller, simpler device. With larger tanks, sub-ohm atomizers, and fire buttons. These devices don’t mimic smoking the way the pod systems and all-in-one devices do. With these devices, you’ll inhale directly to your lungs, and you’ll inhale a significant amount of vapor, creating larger clouds. Like the all-in-one devices, you’ll need to replace a prebuilt coil when the juice starts to taste burnt, making maintaining these devices very simple.

  • Pros: Variety of designs available, rechargeable battery options are available, provide more vapor production than most pod systems, larger refillable tanks, longer battery life
  • Cons: Vape juice can run out quickly, no mouth-to-lung inhales means less flavor, creates a harsher throat feel for most beginners

Suggested Eliquid – Low Nicotine Juices

Because these devices create much more vapor, they’re best for lower nicotine juices (0 to 6mg). Anything stronger will provide a harsh throat hit and likely too much nicotine. In devices like this, higher VG ratios like 70VG/30PG are best.
